Nikki from Tikkido here to share with you a quick and easy tutorial to make waving flag cake toppers.
Fun cake toppers can make even the most basic cake festive. Add these waving flags to any cake–whether bought at a bakery or homemade–and you have a look that immediately screams, “Party!”
Materials and Equipment Needed:
- bamboo skewers
- masking tape
- floral wire
- Mod Podge
- hot glue gun
Start by setting a strip of masking tape, sticky side up, on your work surface.
Place a length of floral wire on the sticky face of the tape.
Place another equal length of masking tape on top of the first piece of tape and wire–this time, sticky side down, so that the wire is enclosed in the masking tape. This will provide the pose-able form for your flags.
Cut a piece of fabric twice as long as your piece of masking tape and wire, and a little bit wider. Adhere with Mod Podge.
Fold the fabric over, completely encasing the masking tape and wire. Mod Podge on the outside of the fabric, both sides, as well. Let dry.
Once the Mod Podge has dried, use sharp scissors to trim the edges of the fabric flags, and cut them to shapre. Make them any size you like, but I favor long flags (more waves!).
Once the flags are cut to shape, it’s simply a matter of gluing them to the food-safe bamboo skewers. Start by using a hot glue gun to attach the dowel to the end of the flag. Let cool for a bit, then roll the end of the flag around the skewer to cover the bamboo. Secure in place with a bit more hot glue.
All that’s left to do is bend the flags into waves…
…and of course, stick in the top of a cake!
